Don Binney is one of New Zealand's most recognisable artists and influential arts educators. He has described himself as a "figurative painter concerned with the psychic metaphor of the environment."  Binney's works span a lifetime of analysis, digesting and re-representing the wildlife and landscapes of New Zealand. He is most appreciated for his use of strong lines and bold colours reducing birds and landscapes to their bare essentials.
