Nigel Brown studied at Elam School of Fine Art where he was taught by Colin McCahon and Garth Tapper. Brown is interested in looking at life in New Zealand, drawing on his suburban environment, often with political or social commentary.  His work is of a very individual iconic style with recurring images of Ponga tree and suburbia. Often paints portraits of well known identities.
